Photoshop Elements Series

With digital photography becoming so popular these days, understanding the world of Photoshop Elements is a must.

Duane Childers is offering a 4 week Photoshop Elements course at Black Creek starting on Monday, February 21st and continuing each Monday until March 14th. The classes will be held from 6-8pm. The cost of the series is $80.

Laptops are helpful but not necessary and everything in the class will also apply to Photoshop.

Ornament Hour at BCAC on November 17th

Bring your child to help Amelia Little and Jordan Heydt decorate the Arts Center's Christmas Tree with handmade ornaments.

Ornament Hour will be held on Wednesday, November 17th from 3:30 to 4:30 at the Black Creek Arts Center (116 West College Avenue in Hartsville). Ornament Hour is free and children of all ages are invited.

No supplies needed. Come as you are and have a blast.

Oil Painting Series

Vicky McLain is back this December. For two Monday nights, she will be teaching an oil painting series on Dec 13th and 20th from 6-8:15. Vicky will supply the canvas and the oil paint. The other supplies needed are brushes, palette, brush cleaner of some kind, paper towels, Huggies, and Q-tips. The cost of the series is $45.

Stained Glass Workshop

On Saturday, November 13th from 9-1, Black Creek is offering a Stained Glass Workshop. This class wil be taught by stained glass artist, Cheryl Wingert. Cheryl is a hobbyist who has been playing with stained glass for about 3 years and who enjoys working with the varying methods and mediums.

Wine 101 Class

Black Creek will be hosting Wine 101 starting in October. This 3 week class will be taught by Judy Haenni. Judy is an experienced wine consultant that will make wine tasting a fun even and not knowledge about soil, climate, grapes or regions. Just the understanding of what you do and don't like about the wines you will tast. Last year her classes filled up quickly and participants even got together for a wine tasting party afterwards.

Participants will learn whats tastes to look for in wines and what they like about various wines. Classes will discuss and taste:

Week 1 - Flavors prevalent in wines, wine books, "viewers", tastings of bubbly

Week 2 - What our taste-buds like, wine resources, tastings of white wines

Week 3 - Pairing of food $ wine & tastings of red wines

All the wines tasted can easily be purchased at wine shops in the area and a couple of grocery stores. All wines will be less than $25 a bottle.

Come enjoy, explore, and discover wines you have never thought about or tasted before. Bring 2 champagne flutes the first week for each person.

The classes will be held on Saturday October 23 from 2-4, Monday October 25 from 7-9, and Monday November 1 from 7-9. The cost of the series is $60 a person, $100 a couple - if registered before class. At time of class, $70 a person or $120 a couple.

Calligraphy Class

Calligraphy - The art of elegant handwriting; used for official invitations, diplomas, announcements, and other important documents.

Columbia artist, Pat Saad, will be teaching a Calligraphy class on Monday, September 13 from 6:30pm-8:30pm for beginners. The class will cover all of the basic strokes and techniques. All you will need to bring is a Sheaffer Bold Tip Calligraphy pen or equivalent. The cost of the class is $35.

Oil Portrait Painting Class

On August 21 from 9am - 2pm, Vicky McLain is teaching a Portrait Painting Class here at BCAC.

In this class you will learn to use a palette that is similar to that of Rembrant. The canvas and photo will be provided for this workshop. This is a great class for beginning and intermediate oil painters. The cost of the class is $39.

Supplies to bring:

Oil paints - burnt sienna, asphaltum (by Gamblin or Shiva), cadmium red light, yellow ochre, ivory black and titanium white

Variety of brushes including: #8 round bristle, #6 round bristle and #2 round sable for detail work

Q-Tips, Easle, Paper Towels, Huggie Wipes, Murphy's Oil Soap or Odorless Minderal Spirits for brush cleaning and newspaper/plastic to cover your work area.

Summer classes at BCAC

Darlington County Artists Mike & Patz Fowle will be leading a week-long camp June 7th - 11th.

Students will spend two days at the Fowle's art studio and two days in the Black Creek classroom. The last day of camp will take place at BCAC and culminate in a gallery show. The camp is for rising 5k through 5th graders.

The cost of the camp is $100 and will last from 9 am to 2 pm. Lunch is provided.

The Third Annual Camp Creative will be held during the weeks of July 19-23 and 26-30. The first week will be for rising 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th graders. The second week will be for rising 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th graders.

Students will spend a week learning different art techniques, materials, and history. The last day of camp will culminate in a gallery show at BCAC.

The cost of the camp is $50 and will last from 9:30 to 12:30 daily.

On Monday, June 14, Frankie Bush will be offering a watercolor class.
Class will take place at BCAC from 10 am - 4 pm. Please bring a bag lunch.

Black Creek Arts Council is excited to offer two free art education classes in April.

"FREE FRIDAY WITH MIKE FOWLE..."

Local green artist & sculptor Mike Fowle will be leading a "Green Art Making" class on Friday, April 9th from 11:00-12:00. It is open to the first 15 students to sign up between the ages of 13 and 18. Mike's work will be on exhibit in the Black Creek Gallery during the month of April. "WHEEL-THROWING...Try out pottery day"

On Saturday, April 17th, in Black Creek's Pottery Studio you can have the chance to try your hand at the wheel-throwing pottery technique. Something you have always wanted to try??? Drop in between the hours of 1pm and 4pm to watch a live pottery demo and give it a whirl. Wear your old clothes, bring a towel with you and expect a lot of fun. Local potter Barbara Watson will be here, along with others to show you how you can be a potter too.

Bob Fuery will be instructing a watercolor painting class. This will be a class to explore color, composition, balance and textures while learning and working with the art medium watercolor. The group will work on a painting of a rural SC barn scene.

Creating Succesful Paintings

2 Day Watercolor Workshop with Anne Patterson

In this workshop, artists will be taught to analyze their photographs for design elements that will produce stronger paintings. Artists will be shown a demonstration on utilizing photoshop elements to create better images. Students will have the chance to ask individual questions regarding their own images.

Dates: Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20

Times: Arrive at 9:30 for set up, instruction begins at 10:00. There will be a break for lunch around 12:30 and class will resume at 1:00. The afternoon will end at 4:00.

This class will be offered on Wednesday afternoons in February from 4-5 at Black Creek Arts Center. Classes start February 3 through February 24. This class is aimed at students in grades 1-5. The cost is $35.

The class will explore several famous artists' lives and work through art making, story telling, books, games, and songs.

"Tiny Artists" Classes

An upcoming art class for "tiny artists" ages 3-5 will start in February. Classes will take place each Tuesday, from 3:30-4:00 at the arts center, starting February 2-February 23. The cost for the class is $30.

Monthly Metals for Kids..."Making a Ring"

with instuctor Beth Wicker

This class will take place at the arts center on February 11th, from 3:30-4:30. Students will have the chance to make their own adjustable copper ring. They will learn to mark and file the metal and create textures with hammers and metal stamps. Cost for the class is $20. Open to students in 3rd grade and up.

Hand-building with Clay Classes

On Tuesday evenings in February, starting February 9th, Mary Lou Bailey will be teaching hand-building pottery techniques for interested kids ages 8 and above. Monthly Metals...Jewlery Workshop

Artist and instructor Beth Wicker is starting a Jewlery Making Series called "MONTHLY METALS" at the arts center. These one session classes will take place on first Thurdays of the month and offer different jewelry making techniques each time.

February will kick off the series with "Making a Cuff Bracelet." During this session, students will work in copper and brass to make a textured cuff bracelet. (Silver will be available for an additional fee based on the current metals market.) You will learn how to draw on metal, cut it, file it, and texture it with hammers & metal texturing stamps.

The class will be held at the Arts Center on February 11th, from 5-8pm. The cost for the class is $70 and includes all the supplies needed to make and take your own bracelet. (But please bring a pair of safety glasses and something to tie back long hair.) Welcome to grades 7 through adult.

Upcoming Oil Painting Classes at Birds Of A Feather

Vicky McLain will be offering a weekly class at Birds Of A Feather in Darlington, beginning September 30th. The four-week class will meet on Wednesdays from 10am to noon. The cost for the class is $70. Call Linda Howle at 843.616.2561 to sign up.

Stained Glass & Ukrainian Egg Workshops Coming Soon

Stained Glass Class

Cheryl Wingert will be offering a Beginner's Stained Glass Class on Mondays in November beginning November 9th. The class will meet 6-8pm and the cost is $65.

Students will be provided with overview of stained glass methods, including copper foil and leaded glass. Student will make one or more copper foiled sun catcher projects (or Christmas ornaments). All materials included. Instruction time will be approximately 8 hours. Class limited to 6.

Ukrainian Egg Workshop

Accomplished Ukrainian Egg Artist Ivy McLaurin will be leading a workshop on December 5th at the Black Creek Arts Center.

Students will learn the history and legends associated with this centuries-old technique. Students will learn to use the ancient "candle" method as well as being taught using electric kistky. Cost for the workshop is $70. All supply costs are included in the price.

The workshop will last from 10am to 4pm. Please bring your own lunch. Drinks will be provided by the Arts Council.

Mondays with Michelle

Beginning July 6th, Michelle Morris will be offering art classes on Mondays from 4:00 to 5:15. These classes will cover all types of art, from painting to mixed media, and from drawing to sculpture.

Mondays with Michelle will run in four-week segments:

August 31st through September 28th (no class on Labor Day)
or
October 5th through October 26th

Each session costs $20. Sign up for all four and pay $70.

This is a new offering from BCAC. Art by Nature is a mixed media art class inspired by nature.

Anne Patterson's Supply List

Close study of classic painters has brought much influence to the work of Anne Hightower-Patterson. The figures of Degas and the watercolors of Wyeth were early inspirations in her paintings. Even today, images of these painters guide her choices of subject matters. Later, study of Winslow homer and John Singer Sargent has inspired her watercolors by their brilliance in color and design. The most contemporary paintings that have moved her are the works of Stephen Scott Young and Carolyn Brady. Their use of light and color make powerful statements in their works which are personal and moving.She is a member with Excellence of the South Carolina Watercolor Society and has had work selected for local, state and national competitions. She is also well known as a juror, speaker and teacher of watercolor.

March Arts Ed Classes

Photoshop with Duane Childers - $200, includes program.

Duane Childers will be offering a Photoshop Class beginning March 16th and ending April 6th. The Monday class will last from 6:00 - 7:15 and will be held at the Arts Center. You will need to have a laptop for this class.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 will be the program used for the class. The class will cover the functions of each tool within the program, importing and organizing pictures, fixing color and other problems, resizing images for print and web-use and much more.

Watercolor Class

Jo Furman will be offering a Watercolor Class on Tuesdays beginning March 10th and ending March 31st. The cost for the class is $65. The class will meet from 11am to 1pm.

Jo Furman is a member of the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail and has taught several classes at Black Creek Arts Council over the years.

Art History Class for Children

Leslie Pinto will offer an Art History Class for young people on Tuesday Nights from 6:30 - 7:30 beginning March 10th and ending March 31st.

The $40 course will study the lives of the following artists: Matisse, Van Gogh, Picasso and Monet. Students will create projects in the likeness of each artists' style. Ages 7 - 10.

Morris to Offer Clay & Mixed Media

Michelle Morris will be offering a Clay Class for children ages 3 -12. The class will meet on Mondays from 4:00 - 5:15. The cost is $20 for the 4-week session. The first class will be March 9th.

Morris will also be offering a Mixed Media Class for children ages 3 -12. This class will meet on Wednesdays from 4:00 - 5:15 and will begin on March 11th. Cost for the 4-session class is $20.

Photography Class with Duane Childers

Award-winning photojournalist Duane Childers will be teaching a photography class on Monday evenings from 6:00 - 7:15. Cost for the class is $90. There will be six sessions, with the first being January 12th. Participants will need to bring their own digital cameras. The class will be held at the Arts Center.

Children's Clay Classes with Michelle Morris

Michelle Morris will be offering Children's Clay Classes on Mondays in Hartsville and on Tuesdays in Darlington. In the class, students will make and paint a variety of clay figurines. The class is great for children ages 3 - 12.

On Mondays, beginning January 5th and ending January 26th, Michelle will teach at the Arts Center in Hartsville.

On Tuesdays, beginning January 6th and ending January 27th, Michelle will teach at Birds of a Feather on Siskon Street in Darlington.

Cost for the classes is $20. Both classes will meet from 4:00 - 5:15.

Mixed Media Class with Michelle Morris

Michelle Morris will also lead a Mixed Media Class for children ages 3 - 12. This class will meet on Wednesdays at the Arts Center in Hartsville. The class will meet from 4:00 - 5:15 beginning on January 7th and ending on January 28th. Cost for the class is $20.

Weekend Workshops: Collage & Print-Making

Patz Fowle and Wan Marsh will be offering workshops in January:

Patz Fowle will be offering a monotype print-making workshop in Darlington at Birds of a Feather on January 24th. The workshop will last from 10am to noon. The cost for the workshop is $40. Monotype printing is a fascinating technique for creating exciting artwork. Images can be made using specialized inks that are applied by rolling or painting onto non-porous plates. These plates may then be altered with sgraffito to add the look of texture and design. After that, an impression of the image is transferred onto paper.

Wan Marsh will be offering a Collage Workshop on January 24th at the Arts Center in Hartsville. The workshop will take place from 10am to 4pm. Lunch will be provided. Cost for the workshop is $110. Spaces are filling quickly.

Marsh's work has been featured in several publications and won numerous awards. Marsh studied art at the Governor's School of North Carolina at Salem College in Winston Salem. She has also studied at The Penland School of Crafts, the Mint Museum and CPCC in Charlotte North Carolina. Wan has degrees in design and horticulture. Marsh's mixed media collages consist of, but are not limited to paint, paper, wood, glass, fiber and found objects. She also incorporates many of her unique decorative painting techniques to achieve unlimited effects.

Adult Art Class

On Wednesdays beginning January 7th and ending January 28th, Michelle Morris will be leading a 3D Art Class for adults. The cost for the class is $40. The class will meet from 5:30 - 6:45 for four weeks. This class will be held at the Arts Center.

Morris to Offer Holiday Themed Classes

Let Michelle Morris help you make those perfect gifts for the ones you love by taking her Holiday Clay Class in November.

On Mondays from 4:00 - 5:15, Michelle will lead a class for students ages 3 -13. The first class will meet on November 3rd.

On Mondays from 5:30 - 6:45, Michelle will lead a class for students ages 14 - 18. The first class will meet on November 3rd.

Cost for these classes is $20. No previous experience working with clay is needed for these classes.

Ilona to Lead Two Oil Painting Workshops

Ilona Smithkin will be following up her magnificent performance in the Long Lash Cabaret with a pair of oil painting workshops.

Ilona will be offering a Landscapes Oil Painting class from 9:30 - 12:30 each morning the week of October 27th through the 31st. The following week (November 3rd - 7th), she will be offering a Still Life Oil Painting class from 9:30 - 12:30. Each workshop costs $135.

Acting Classes:

Whether it's on the stage (Steel Magnolias, The Glass Menagerie - to name a few), a television set (Scrubs, Days of Our Lives, Star Trek), or a commercial (too many to name), Shay Brown has the experience in front of the camera. In October, Shay will be bringing her talents to Black Creek for On-Camera Commercial Classes. Students will star in their own commercials and have a recording to take home to their family at the end of the class. Shay will be offering a class for students ages 7 -10 on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:15. The classes will begin on October 9th and end on October 30th. Shay will be offering a class for students ages 11 - 15 on Thursdays from 5:30 - 6:45. The classes will run from October 9th to October 30th. The cost for the class is $60

On October 21st, Ilona Smithkin, along with a variety of local talent, will present The Long Lash Cabaret. Ilona is sure to delight the audience with a magnificent performance at the Arts Center. The event begins at 7pm. Tickets are $30 for an individual and $50 for a couple.

Commissioned Portraits:
From October 22nd through the 24th, Ilona will sit down and create sanguine portraits at your request. Call Bruce to schedule an appointment, 843.332.6234. Visit the Arts Center to see other sanguine works by Ilona. Prices for portraits vary.

Fix My Painting:
If you have a painting you're not happy with or want critiqued, bring it in for a consultation with Ilona on October 23rd or 24th. Call to make an appointment. The cost is $40.

Oil Painting Class- Landscapes:
Ilona will offer an oil painting class for the week of October 27th through the 31st. This weeklong workshop will meet daily from 9:30 - 12:30. Cost for the class is $135.

Oil Painting Class- Still Life:
Ilona will offer an oil painting class for the week of November 3rd through the 7th. This weeklong workshop will meet daily from 9:30 - 12:30. Cost for the class is $135.

Adult Painting Class:

Leslie Pinto will be offering an Acrylic Painting Class for adults on Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 8:30. This class is for beginners and will cover the basics, including sketching, underpainting, and color theory. Cost for the four session class (October 9th - October 30th) is $65. Children's Art Classes:

BCAC will be offering the following art classes for children during the month of October:

Clay: On Mondays from 4:00 - 5:15 beginning October 6th through the 27th, Michelle Morris will lead a hand-building clay class. Cost for the class is $24. Ages 3-12. Children ages 3-5 need to be accompanied by an adult or older sibling.

Mixed Media: On Wednesdays from 4:00 - 5:15 beginning October 8th through October 29th, Michelle Morris will lead a mixed media art class. Cost for the class is $24. Ages 3-12. Children ages 3-5 need to be accompanied by an adult or older sibling.

Pottery Classes:

Barbara Watson and Mary Lou Bailey will be offering classes in the pottery studio during the month of October.
